In 1932, David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of the great Mexican artists of the 20th century, was commissioned to paint an idealized tropical scene on a second story exterior wall on Olvera Street. Siqueiros instead created America Tropical, a scene that generated great controversy after its public unveiling.
